Transform Your Mental Health with Innovative Therapies

At Good Mind Therapeutics, we offer psychedelic-assisted therapy as a potential option to help improve mental health for eligible patients.

This involves a carefully controlled environment where an authorised psychiatrist prescribes a psychedelic compound as part of an ongoing observational study.

Our experienced team will guide you through each phase of the process, providing comprehensive care to ensure that your therapy is conducted safely and under medical supervision.

Our goal with psychedelic-assisted therapy in Brisbane, where this therapy is to be offered initially, is to support you in addressing emotional challenges and difficult mental health conditions.

While individual experiences may vary, this approach aims to complement other therapeutic methods and offer an alternative for those who have not seen progress with traditional therapy.

Our multidisciplinary team, including clinical psychologists and psychotherapists, will be there to support you every step of the way.

Who Provides Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy in Australia?

In Australia, only registered and authorised psychiatrists are permitted to prescribe psychedelic-assisted therapy. These professionals must also secure approval from a human research ethics committee, ensuring that all treatments adhere to safety protocols and are appropriately tailored to each patient’s needs.

GoodMind Therapeutics are one of the first clinics in Australia to offer this mental health therapy option.

All doses are administered in a carefully controlled, monitored environment under the direct supervision of a psychiatrist. As part of our commitment to safety, patients are not permitted to take the medication home or use it outside of supervised sessions.

Our goal is to ensure that each session is conducted in a secure and supportive setting, optimising your experience with psychedelic-assisted therapy.

At GoodMind Therapeutics, we are committed to providing expert care and support throughout the entire process.

What is the Treatment Process?

At Good Mind Therapeutics, we follow a structured and compassionate approach to ensure a safe and supportive experience. Our process is designed to guide you through each stage, offering care and assistance from preparation to integration.

1. Preparatory Session

We begin by building a foundation of trust between you and your therapist, a crucial step to ensure you feel supported throughout the process. These preparatory sessions focus on both practical and emotional readiness, helping you prepare for the psychedelic-assisted therapy dosing session.

2. Dosing Session

During the dosing session, an authorised psychiatrist will administer a carefully measured dose of the psychedelic substance in a controlled medical setting. This session is conducted under strict supervision to ensure your safety and to support the therapeutic process.

3. Integration Session

After the dosing session, our therapists will work with you during integration sessions to help explore and interpret the experiences you had. These sessions aim to assist you in understanding the insights or sensations that may have surfaced during the therapy.

Why Choose Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy in Brisbane?

Australia is leading the way in recognising certain psychedelics as potential therapeutic tools, allowing innovative treatments like psychedelic-assisted therapy to be available for eligible patients.

The goal of psychedelic-assisted therapy is to help address emotional obstacles and long-term problems expediently by utilising the psychedelic journey, rather than spending months or years in talk therapy slowly working through them.

It is an innovative option for people who are not finding solutions through other mental health therapy options.

Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Costs

Our psychedelic-assisted therapy program, currently available in Brisbane and the Southern Gold Coast, costs approximately $25,000. This includes Medicare refundable items, potentially covering up to $6,000.

Some private health insurers may also cover a portion of the costs, depending on your policy. We recommend contacting your insurer for more details on coverage options.

The therapy program, which runs for a minimum of 12 weeks, includes psychotherapy sessions lasting 6–8 hours, as well as regular psychiatrist reviews. Throughout the dosing process, two clinicians will be with you, offering continuous support to ensure your comfort and safety.

Screening and Assessment Service Fees

  • Nurse practitioner assessment fee: $149
  • Extended psychiatrist’s assessment fee: $799

These assessments are important steps in preparing for your therapy. Please note that cancellations made with less than 24 hours’ notice will incur a cancellation fee.

What is psilocybin?

Psilocybin is a naturally occurring psychedelic produced by over 200 species of mushroom. It has historically been used as a psychedelic agent for religious and spiritual ceremonies, as well as a therapeutic option for neuropsychiatric conditions.

Once ingested psilocybin metabolises to psilocin, and given its structural similarity to serotonin, activates the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor, which mediates many different functions in our minds; like mood, imagination, learning and perception.

It is this receptor activation that is thought to produce psilocybin’s psychedelic effects. These effects, which are dose-dependent, can include heightened perception, thinking in new ways, experiencing intense emotions connected to sensory experiences, distortions of time, and hallucinations of closed-eye and open-eye visuals and auditory sensations.

The psychedelic therapy experience aims to help individuals gain new perspectives on their thoughts and emotions and may help to break negative thought patterns and behaviours.

What is MDMA?

MDMA isn’t a classical psychedelic, and has no overt hallucinatory effects, but can mimic psilocybin in producing feelings of depersonalization and altered perception and thought. MDMA is an empathogen drug meaning it can increase feelings of empathy and kindness, social acceptance, and connection to others. MDMA acts by increasing the release of serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine, although the enhanced release of oxytocin may also be a factor.

MDMA can be used during psychotherapy, with the aim to reduce defensiveness, increasing relaxation and improving mood. This may enable someone to revisit traumatic memories and work through their emotions without being re-traumatised or finding the associated fear too overwhelming.

The research

There is a growing body of research exploring the use of psychedelic therapy for the treatment of mental health conditions, particularly treatment-resistant conditions where conventional treatment has been tried numerous times and fallen short or failed.

Some research studies have demonstrated reductions in symptoms through the implementation of psychedelic-assisted therapy protocols (Griffiths et al., 2016; Mithoefer et al., 2018). Furthermore, long-term follow-up assessments have shown some participants experiencing enduring improvements in mental health and quality of life (Ross et al., 2016; Carhart-Harris et al., 2018). These findings warrant further research into psychedelic therapy as an approach that transcends conventional treatment modalities, paving the way for new options in mental healthcare.
