From May 2025, a key medication used in Intranasal Therapy has been added to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS)– a major milestone in improving affordability for Australians seeking innovative mental health support options.
If you’ve been exploring treatment options and wondering about Intranasal Therapy cost in Australia, here’s what you need to know.
What Is the Intranasal Therapy Cost in Australia Under the PBS?
Previously priced at around $800 per dose, this therapy is now subsidised for eligible individuals:
- Concession card holders: approximately $7.70 per dose
- General patients: approximately $31.60 per dose
This change makes Intranasal Therapy significantly more accessible through the PBS, easing the financial burden for many.
Please note: While the medication is subsidised, the cost of clinic visits for supervised administration is not included in the PBS listing.
What is Intranasal Therapy?
Intranasal Therapy is a supervised treatment that involves administering a prescribed medication via a nasal spray. It’s designed for individuals who have not found success with conventional approaches and aims to improve mood regulation and overall well-being.
Please note: this therapy is subject to a comprehensive screening process. While we aim to support as many individuals as possible, this therapy may not be appropriate for everyone. Our team will guide you through each step to determine the best approach for your specific needs.
What is the treatment process?
The therapy process includes:
- Screening Form: Complete our online screening form to assess your eligibility.
- Initial Consultation: Speak with a Nurse Practitioner (via telephone) for further assessment.
- Psychiatrist Assessment: A psychiatrist approved to prescribe Esketamine will evaluate your suitability for therapy (a GP referral is required).
Once approved, your therapy involves:
- Induction Phase: Two sessions per week for the first four weeks.
- Maintenance Phase: Gradual reduction to one session every fortnight, tailored to your progress and individual needs.
