Home Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy (TMS)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment (TMS) involves the use of magnetic pulses to activate specific brain regions. TMS is delivered across multiple sessions within a clinic or hospital and it can improve symptoms of major, treatment-resistant depression. TMS is one of several options available for patients with depression when oral medications have been ineffective.
Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation involves the use of repeated magnetic pulses over the course of several sessions. During these sessions, an electromagnetic coil is placed against your scalp, delivering magnetic pulses that stimulate nerve cells related to mood control. Transcranial magnetic stimulation is often used where medication has not worked and can provide relief for those with severe depression.
A qualified clinician will review your history, previous treatments, symptoms, and any relevant considerations to determine an appropriate pathway forward.
Our treatment pathways are designed by psychiatrists and overseen by mental-health clinicians. These programs help ensure your care is coordinated, monitored, and aligned with your individual needs.
Our trained mental-health nurses deliver your sessions in a supportive environment. They provide one-on-one monitoring, preparation guidance, and post-session check-ins to help you feel safe and informed throughout your care.
Your progress is reviewed regularly, and your care plan may evolve based on your goals, preferences, and clinical needs.

TMS therapy is a way to address treatment‐resistant depression, but like all treatments, it does not work for everyone. Side effects and efficacy vary from person to person so discussion all of your treatment options can be helpful when choosing the right path for you.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) uses magnetic pulses to stimulate specific brain regions involved in mood regulation. Over a course of sessions, this repeated stimulation can support neuroplasticity, the brain’s ability to form and strengthen new neural pathways. Your clinican can discuss different treatment options which work to promote neuroplasticity to help you form new brain pathways.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation cost varies depending on eligibility, provider and the extent of sessions required. A single session may range from about AUD $150‑$300, and a full course (20‑30 sessions) may cost approximately AUD $3,000‑$9,000 without subsidies. Some clinics all able to bill Medicare for eligible patients.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation side effects can include scalp discomfort or tingling at the site of stimulation, headaches, and light‑headedness following a session. Rarely, there is a risk of more serious events such as seizure, but this is extremely low when the procedure is properly conducted. Many protocols require daily sessions during the first week of treatment.
Yes, but only under specific conditions. Since November 2021, TMS for depression (specifically repetitive TMS or rTMS) has been added to the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) for eligible patients who meet defined criteria. Otherwise, you’ll likely need to self‑fund or check private insurance coverage in order to cover transcranial magnetic stimulation depression treatment.
TMS is not a one-time cure, and the duration of benefit from transcranial magnetic brain stimulation will vary by person and condition. Some patients begin to notice improvement within a few sessions, while others may take several weeks. The course is often daily sessions (5 days/week) for 4‑6 weeks. Maintenance sessions may sometimes be needed to sustain benefits. Evidence suggests that in patients who complete a full course of 20-30 sessions, remission rates are higher.
Transcranial magnetic stimulation Australia is most often considered when someone has treatment‑resistant depression, meaning they have tried and not sufficiently responded to two or more antidepressant medications at therapeutic doses, and psychological therapy where appropriate. You must also be over 18, medically safe to undergo TMS magnetic treatment (no contraindicated implants, seizures, etc.), and having a psychiatrist assess the suitability. Some research also explores the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation for anxiety, OCD and PTSD, though the strongest evidence remains with depression.
